From week 2 on The Social Peloton will present rankings in four categories: riders, teams, web & livetickers and journalists. For all these categories the rankings are split in the most tweeting accounts and the accounts which gained most followers during that week.

Soon after the launch we started our Peloton Twitter rankings, which have become a great success. This post will provide an overview of the journalist rankings over 2013. We only have a selected group of journalists in our database and do not count replies. The rankings are therefore not exhaustive and based on tweets from June 2013 and onwards.

rankingsThe Social Peloton processed a total of 4,439 tweets from the peloton during week 52. The week perfectly reflects the other off season weeks, although the amount of tweets containing Christmas diners was peaking this week. The team rankings are topped by Belkin Pro Cycling, Omega Pharma Quickstep Cycling team and Team MTN-Qhubeka. The rider rankings are topped by the regular 3: Russell Downing, Jens Voigt and Filippo Pozzato. What is weird is that Pozzato always manages to finish in third place no matter who is on places one and two.

rankingsA quiet week for The Social Peloton during week 51, only 4,971 tweets from the peloton were processed. Most teams, however, started their engines and send some tweets to their fan base. Especially Belkin Pro Cycling, ORICA-GreenEDGE and Team Sky were active during week 51. 

Russell Downing (Team Netapp - Endura) was the most tweeting rider during week 51 with 64 tweets. He just started his final sprint to become the most active cyclist on Twitter for 2013. rankingsWeek 50 was a little quieter than the previous week with only 5,262 tweets (5,613 tweets last week). The team rankings are topped by Team MTN-Qhubeka, Belkin Pro Cycling and Trek Factory Racing. Team MTN-Qhubeka launched their 2014 team last week and showed their new black and yellow team kit. Belkin Pro Cycling is currently on training camp just like the new Trek Factory Racing team.

rankingsWeek 49 brought The Social Peloton a total of 5,613 tweets, which is a few hundred more than last week. Preperations for the 2014 season have really kicked in now with the riders posting pictures when cycling in warm sunny conditions or on their Tacx in a damp shed. At least there is some action again!

Creating race awareness using internet technology

racesAt the end of July a petition has been started by Emma Pooley, Kathryn Bertine, Marianne Vos and Chrissie Wellington on a Tour de France for females in 2014. The petition is currently backed by more than 90,000 supporters, so there certainly is a public for it. Christian Prudomme, director of the Tour de France, is willing to talk about the possibilities, but has doubts if it is financially and logistically feasible. Team MTN-Qhubeka: Moving forward

MTN-logoTeam MTN-Qhubeka became the first Pro Continental team from the African continent this year. Although the team has been around for multiple years as a continental team, for most of the cycling fans the team was the new kid on the block.
